Blackwork Iris and Kingfisher
BLACKWORK PATTERN DESIGNED BY Lesley Teare Designs
The fascinating thing about this design is the way cross stitch and Blackwork are combined and compliment each other in a single piece. Like cross stitch, Blackwork is a counted thread technique, with backstitches combined into various shapes and motifs.
Thus the kingfisher in the foreground, watching its prey, is worked in cross stitch. The striking turquoise tone of its shimmering plumage is used in small touches in other parts of the embroidery.
Other areas of the design are by contrast stylized patterns, worked in orange and black, with a great variety of backstitch motifs. The different densities of Blackwork patterns create different shades. Thus the reeds, the iris and the large white flowers stand out while the cross stitch leaves seem to blend into the background.
The chart comes with an extensive Stitching Guide detailing all stitches including fractional stitches.
