The Sugarplum
CROSS STITCH PATTERN DESIGNED BY Shannon Christine Designs
The Sugarplum fairy dance is one of the most famous tunes of the Nutcraker ballet composed by Chaikovsky. It is also found in old music boxes that have delighted children since time immemorial: as we open the box a little dancer starts turning around in front of a mirror, to the sound of the enchanting music.
This cross-stitch pattern by Shannon Christine features the little dancer twirling on her toes. Her slender hand extended skywards seems to scatter snowflakes - which are deposited at her feet.
The stitching of the the ballerina tutu skirt is very elaborate, with large ruffles lined with gold threads. Pearls adorn her hair, her neck and her bodice. A garland of holly, mistletoe and poinsettias is attached to her waist, a delicate touch evocative of the Christmas theme of ballet. The chart includes a few fractional cross stitches, especially used for the detail of the face.
