The Smell of Lilies
CROSS STITCH PATTERN DESIGNED BY Gera! by Kyoko Maruoka
In this portrait, a young kimono-clad girl is sitting in the traditional Japanese way, at a low table. Next to her is a vase of flowers. She is leaning her head on her hand, deep in her thoughts, acutely aware of the strong fragrance of the flowers.
"However bored and alone, the smell of lilies will lift ones spirits"
The design is inspired by the scene and the quote from the novel by Osamu Dazai, The Schoolgirl. The novel deals with adolescence and all the thoughts playing havoc in the young girl's mind.
This is a gorgeous cross stitch piece, with beautiful detail in the girl's hairstyle and kimono. There are temari balls on the table, as if she has just been busy making them. The blue and white porcelain vase is also exquisitely depicted. However it is the - expertly designed - oversize lily flower that dominates the work, mirroring what is happening in the young girls mind.
