1789, the French Revolution has just struck the monarchy, patriotic songs resonate in the streets of Paris, tricolor ribbon cockades bloom on monuments, and people gather here and there around a freshly planted Tree of Liberty.
Perrette Samouiloff captures the spirit of these troubled times, humourously making aristocrats (right) and common people (left) meet at the foot of the tree. Observe how meticulously she depicts the variety of costumes of these revolutionary times, with the commoner woman on the left already dressed in the tricolor stripes that became fashion statement of the times, while the aristocrats seem stuck in their rigid outfits and attitudes.
Willingly or unwillingly, in this turbulent period, all turn their gaze to this tree dressed in the new French flag. All except the little girl holding out a tricolor bouquet of flowers: is it a symbol of peace, offered to all?
