Lesley Teare's secret needlework garden is full of extraordinary flowers.
This stitched piece focuses on scabious flowers. Three of them , delicately embroidered in Blackwork lace*, the hearts of the flower seen very close-up, as if to discover their infinitely rich detail. Three butterflies fly among the flowers, their wings also in fine blackwork stitches. A little chickadee (black capped tit) has also come to visit - it is worked in cross stitch with great delicacy.
*Like cross stitch, Blackwork is a counted thread technique, with stitches represented on a grid. A majority of stitches are backstitch, with some cross stitch filling certain areas. The chart comes with an extensive Stitching Guide detailing all stitches including fractional stitches.
