Delft Tiles
CROSS STITCH PATTERN DESIGNED BY Lesley Teare Designs
In the Mid 17th to 18th century, in Golden age Holland, the city of Delft saw an amazing develoment of pottery, in particular tiles painted in different hues of blue on a white background. The ceramics gave their name to the color now known as Delft Blue. The tiles were decorated with miniatures scenes that became works of art in their own right.
This pattern is quite a feat in cross stitch, it's amazing how much detail was fitted into the tiny Dutch landscapes typical of Delft Tiles.
Featured in a small hexagonal cartouche above right is a miniature harbour set on a hill, ships sailing in in light winds, seagulls flying and two geese walking along the shore.
The second scene, features a the inland sea and a castle, with a sailboat sailing by, tipping in the stronger winds. Notice the typical canal draw bridges in the distance.
The third scene is actually a potter's workshop set in the sand dunes on the sea shore. More sail boats can be seen in the distance. The tall brick chimney was used for firing the earthenware.
Surrounding each cartouche, on alternative sides, are small floral motifs and a vase.
