Blackwork Seahorse and friends
BLACKWORK PATTERN DESIGNED BY Lesley Teare Designs

This stunning design is a feast for the eyes. it comes in an exquisite mix of aqua blue and lime green, including shimmering blending filaments, metallic threads and golden beads, and depicts an underwater atmosphere bathed in light and reflections.

The seahorse itself is beautifully rendered, with emphasis on the successive curves and spikes of its extraordinary armoured body and curly tail. This is the second time that designer Lesley Teare tackles the subject of the horse-like underwater creature, or Hippocampus. The first pattern was worked in cross stitch. This time however, the main part of the design is worked in exquisite Blackwork motifs, creating different densities and shading effects in the seahorse's body.

Keeping the sea monster company, are tiny winged creatures, the water nymphs, another of Lesley Teare's favorite topics. Their wings are worked in cross stitch, in a mix of stranded embroidery floss and blending filament.

Like cross stitch, Blackwork is a counted thread technique, with stitches represented on a grid or chart. A majority of stitches are backstitch, with some cross stitch filling certain areas. The chart comes with an extensive Stitching Guide detailing all stitches including fractional stitches.
